Below is the text of a February 5 letter written by Pope John Paul II to Patriarch Josyf Slipyj in which the pontiff revealed his intention to call a synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops. The letter, which was kept secret until recent days, was published in the April 27 issue of The New Star, a Chicago-based Ukrainian Catholic newspaper.
