KYIV – Ukraine subpoenaed fugitive former President Viktor Yanukovych to testify in a corruption investigation. Ukraine’s state-run newspaper Uriadovyi Kurier (Government Courier) carried the text of the subpoena on August 6. The subpoena stated that Mr. Yanukovych was required to appear at the Procurator General’s Office in Kyiv on August 11 for questioning related to an investigation into crimes committed under Article 191 of the Criminal Code. Article 191, Paragraph 5, of the code relates to the “misappropriation of property” and embezzlement of funds through the use of a public office to commit large-scale fraud. Ukrainian Procurator General Viktor Shokin said on July 28 that the process of trying Mr. Yanukovych in absentia has begun. Mr. Yanukovych fled Ukraine in late February 2014 amid violent pro-European mass protests. (RFE/RL, based on reporting by Uriadovyi Kurier and UNIAN)
