Diving

• Sofiia Lyskun and Oleg Kolodiy won silver in the mixed 3-meter and 10-meter team dive at the FINA Diving World Cup on June 5-10 in Wuhan, China.

• Stanislav Oliferchyk and Diana Shelestyuk won silver in the mixed 3-meter synchronized springboard dive at the FINA Diving Grand Prix on May 10-13 in Calgary, Alberta. Sofia Lyskun and Valeriia Liulko finished in fourth place in the women’s 10-meter platform synchronized dive.

• Oleksandr Horshkovozov and Maksym Dolhov won silver in the men’s 10-meter platform synchronized dive, and Oleksandr Gorshkov and Oleg Kolodiy won bronze in the men’s 3-meter springboard synchronized dive at the FINA Diving World Series in Kazan, Russia, on May 4-6. 

Judo

• Dilshot Khalmatov (55 kg) and Kateryna Sablieva (44 kg) won gold at the Junior Judo European Cup in Cluj Napoca, Hungary, on August 11-12. Yevhen Vehera (100 kg) and Anastasiya Antipina (63 kg) won silver medals, and bronze medalists included Oleksii Babenko (90 kg), Stanislav Gunchenko (81 kg), Aslan Kurazov (100 kg), Giorgi Tchokhonelidze (66 kg), Dmytro Tsiukh (81 kg), Vadim Velkov (90 kg), Hanna Antylykalo (70 kg), Khrystyna Ianchuk (52 kg), Daryna Liashuk (48 kg), Vladyslava Netsvit (57 kg) and Anastasiia Vrublevksa (52 kg). Ukraine finished in third place in the medals standings (two gold, two silver and 11 bronze). The tournament attracted 230 athletes from 21 countries.

• Bogdan Iadov (66 kg) won bronze at the Judo Grand Prix in Budapest on August 11-12.

• Daria Bilodid (48 kg) won gold in the women’s division at the Judo Grand Prix in Zagreb, Croatia, on July 28-29. Georgii Zantaraia (66 kg) won silver, and Yakiv Khammo (+100 kg) and Yelyzaveta Kalanina (+78 kg) won bronze. In the medal standings, Ukraine finished in seventh place out of 78 countries.

• Anna Surova (57 kg) won bronze at the Junior European Judo Cup in Prague on July 21-22. The tournament attracted 430 athletes from 39 countries.

• Ukraine’s junior team finished in third place with three medals (two gold and one silver) at the Junior European Judo Cup in Gdynia, Poland, on July 7-8. Hievorh Manukian (73 kg) and Kateryna Sablieva (44 kg) won gold, and Danylo Khlopetsky (66 kg) won silver. The tournament attracted 304 athletes from 21 countries.

• Oleh Verydyba (55 kg) won bronze at the European Cadet Judo Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on July 1. In the teams division, Ukraine tied with Germany for seventh place out of 15 teams. 

• Ukraine won six medals (one gold, one silver and four bronze) and finished in fifth place at the European Judo Cup in Celje, Poland, on June 23-24. Daria Bilodid (48 kg) won gold, Danylo Hutsol (100 kg) won silver, and Oleksandr Mindyla (100 kg), Vasylyna Kyrychenko (+78 kg), Maria Buiok (52 kg) and Anastasiia Sapsai (+78 kg) won bronze medals. The tournament attracted 314 athletes from 25 countries. 

• Ukraine won four gold, four silver and five bronze medals to finish in sixth place at the Veteran European Judo Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, on June 16-17. Winning gold were: Larysa Masenko (70 kg), Sergiy Salaban (90 kg), Illya Chymchyuri (90 kg) and Nugzar Mesablishvili (90 kg). Silver medal winners were: Kostiantyn Ananchenko (81 kg), Mykhailo Koshliak (100 kg), Denys Stetsenko (90 kg) and Oleksandr Venher (66 kg). Bronze medalists were: Vitali Bubon (100 kg), Volodymyr Ivanenko (+100 kg), Oleksii Ovarchenko (+100 kg), Sergii Sinilov (73 kg) and Ievgenii Suprun (90 kg). The tournament attracted more than 1,000 athletes from 35 countries.

• Danylo Hutsol (100 kg) won silver at the Senior European Judo Cup on June 9-10 in Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament attracted 261 athletes from 34 countries.

• Dilshot Khalmatov (55 kg) won fifth place in the men’s division at the Junior European Judo Cup in Leibnitz, Austria, on June 2-3. The tournament attracted 580 athletes from 39 countries.

• Ukraine won two bronze medals – thanks to Yelyzaveta Kalanina (+78 kg) and Maryna Cherniak (48 kg) – at the European Judo Championships in Tel Aviv, Israel, on April 25-28. The competition attracted 368 athletes from 44 countries.

• Ukraine’s Artem Bubyr (73 kg) and Oleh Veredyba (55 kg) won bronze medals at the Cadet European Judo Cup in Teplice, the Czech republic, on April 21-22. The tournament attracted 706 athletes (392 men and 314 women) from 37 countries. 

Hockey

• Ukraine’s ice hockey team finished in first place out of six teams at the IIHF U-18 World Championship (Division I, Group B) in Kyiv on April 20. After five matches played, Ukraine went 4-1, with 12 points, with a goal differential of 10, 18 goals for and eight against. Other teams included Austria, Hungary, Italy, Japan and Romania. Olexander Peresunko was voted best forward and Dmytro Danylenko was named best player for Ukraine as selected by coaches. Best players of each game were: Dmytro Khalin, Peresunko, Hlib Krivoshapkin, and goalkeepers Artur Ohandzhanyan and Vladislav Hurko.

Fencing

• Bogdan Nikishin and Roman Svichkar, both of Ukraine, tied for bronze in the men’s épée event at the World Championships in Wuxi, China, on July 20-27. 

• Bogdan Nikishin and Richard Schmidt of Germany tied for third place in the men’s épée at the European Championships in Novi Sad, Serbia, on June 17-21. Ukraine’s women’s saber team won silver.

• Olga Kharlan won silver in women’s saber at the World Cup event in Tunis, Tunisia, on June 1. 

• Olga Kharlan won gold in the women’s saber event at the team tournament in Antalya, Turkey, on May 27. Olena Voronina won bronze in the same event. 

• Ukraine’s men’s épée team won bronze at the SNCF Reseau Challenge in Paris on May 13.  Ukraine won 38-36 against Israel. Bogdan Nikishin won silver in the men’s individual épée event.

Mixed martial arts

• Welterweight Yaroslav Amosov (20-0, 8 KO) won by unanimous decision after three rounds against Gerald Harris (25-7, 11 KO) of the U.S.A. on July 13 at WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla.

• Welterweight Pavel Kusch (23-5, 3 KO) won by second-round submission against Abubakar Nurmagomedov (14-2, 7 KO) of Russia on July 5 at the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington. 

• Middleweight Sergey Guzev (19-3, 3 KO) won by split decision after five rounds against Wagner Silva (6-4, 2 KO) of Brazil on June 16 in Kyiv at the WWFC Championship. 

• Flyweight Aleksander Doskalchuk (9-1, 4 KO) won by second-round TKO against Arman Ashimov (8-3, 6 KO) of Kazakhstan on May 24 at M-1 Arena in St. Petersburg, Russia. The fight was stopped in the second round in a bout that was scheduled for five rounds.  

Athletics

• Alina Shukh won gold in the women’s javelin throw with a distance of 55.95 meters as part of the heptathlon at the IAAF World U-20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, on July 10-15.

• Maryna Kylypko won bronze in the women’s pole vault (4.45 meters) at the IAAF Diamond League Bauhaus-Galan meeting on June 10 in Stockholm, Sweden. Yuliya Levchenko finished in fourth place in the women’s high jump (1.94 meters).

• Viktoria Tkachuk won silver in the women’s 400-meter hurdles (55.98 seconds) at the Seiko Golden Grand Prix Osaka 2018 on May 20 in Osaka, Japan. Maryna Kylypko finished in fifth place in the women’s pole vault (4.41 meters).

Gymnastics

• Ukraine’s team won second place at the 2018 Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships on June 1-3 in Guadalajara, Spain. In the team events, Ukraine’s junior individuals, Khrystyna Pohranychna and Viktoriia Onopriienko won silver; in the senior group, Anastasiya Voznyak, Valeriya Yuzviak, Valeriya Khanina, Daria Kobets, Alina Bykhno and Diana Myzherytska also won silver. In the junior finals, Pohranychna won silver medals in ball and ribbon, bronze in hoop, and finished in fourth place in clubs. In the senior division, Ukraine won silver in the five hoops event, finished in fourth place in the group all-around and fifth place in the three balls and two ropes. Ukraine finished in fourth place in the medal standings with four silver and one bronze.

Swimming

• Andriy Govorov shattered the world record in men’s 50-meter butterfly with a time of 22.27 seconds at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome on June 29-30. The previous record of 22.43 seconds was held by Rafael Munoz of Spain, who holds five of the top-10 times in men’s 50-meter butterfly. Govorov holds three of the top times. 

Canoeing

• Ukraine won two gold and one bronze medal in the junior division and two gold, one silver and three bronze in the U23 division at the European Canoe Association Canoe Sprint Junior and U23 European Championship in Auronzo, Italy, on June 28 through July 1. In the junior division: Dmytro Ozymok, Pavlo Semeniuk, Oleksandr Yatsiuk and Illia Sharhorodskyi won gold in the men’s C4 500-meter race (1:35.668 seconds); Ozymok won gold in the C1 men’s 200-meter race (41.491 seconds); and Yurii Zub won bronze in the men’s K1 200-meter race (37.205 seconds). In the U23: Liudmyla Luzan won gold in the C1 women’s 500-meter race (2:13.619 seconds); Oleh Kukharyk won gold in the K1 men’s 500-meter race (1:39.373 seconds); Taras Mazovskyi and Denys Filatov won silver in the C2 men’s 500-meter race (1:42.645 seconds); Oleh Kokharyk won bronze in the men’s K1 1,000-meter sprint (3:33.893 seconds); Liudmyla Luzan and Anastasiia Chetverikova won bronze in the women’s C2 500-meter race (2:01.038 seconds); Dmytro Danylenko, Dmytro Kostychen, Daniil Kusmin and Denys Lakhmanov won bronze in the men’s K4 500-meter race (1:21.548 seconds). 

Chess

• Roman Kovalskyi, 11, a young chess player from Ukraine, made headlines during the Mukachevo Summer 2018 Blitz tournament in Ukraine on August 7. Kovalskyi attempted to explain to his Russian opponent, in English, that he did not understand Russian after being asked his chess rating. The Russian player was confused, and a Moldovan player explained to the Russian that the Ukrainian player did not understand Russian. The Ukrainian has a rating of 1618 in standard play, 1613 in rapid and 1623 in blitz, according to the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

• Kamila Hryshchenko, age 16, won the European Youth Rapid and Blitz Championship in Oradea, Romania, on July 31 to August 5. The competition attracted players from Romania, Poland, Estonia, Slovakia, Ukraine, Austria and other European countries, and was divided by age: 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, and 8 and under.

European Championships

• Ukraine finished in eighth place in the medals table standings with eight gold, 13 silver and five bronze medals (26 total) at the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow and Berlin on August 2-12.  The athletics portion was held in Berlin, while the remaining sports competed in Glasgow, Scotland. Maryan Zakalnytskyy won gold in the men’s 50-kilometer race-walk in Berlin. This was the first medal in the 50-kilometer race-walk for Ukraine. Serhii Nykyforov won bronze in the men’s long jump; Nataliya Pryshchepa and Olha Lyakhova won gold and bronze, respectively, in the women’s 800-meter race; Anna Ryzhykova won silver in the women’s 400-meter hurdles; Maryna Bekh won silver in the women’s long jump; and Alina Tsviliy won silver in the women’s 50-kilometer race-walk. Ukraine’s synchronized swimming team won gold in the combination free team event and won silver in the women’s team technical routine in synchronized swimming. Yelyzaveta Yakhno won silver in the solo technical routine and bronze in the solo free routine, Anasasiya Savchuk and Yakhno won silver in the duet free routine, and Savchuk and Yakhno won silver in the duet technical routine. Ukraine won silver in the team free routine and silver in the team technical routine. In swimming, Andriy Govorov won gold in the men’s 50-meter butterfly, setting a championship record of 22.48 seconds – the fourth fastest of all time. Mykhailo Romanchuk won gold medals in the men’s 400-meter freestyle and the 800-meter freestyle, and silver in the men’s 1,500-meter freestyle.  Ukraine’s mixed diving team (Oleh Kolodiy and Sofiya Lyskun) won gold in the team event, and Viktoriya Kesar and Stanislav Oliferchyk won bronze in the mixed three-meter synchronized springboard event. Roman Gladysh won gold in the men’s cycling scratch race, Liubov Basova and Olena Starikova won silver in the team sprint, and Starikova won silver in the women’s 500-meter time trial. In rowing, Ukraine’s women’s team (Daryna Verkhohliad, Olena Buryak, Anastassia Kozhenkova and Ievgeniia Dovhodko) won silver in the W4x race, Diana Dymchenko won bronze in the W1x race.

Skydiving

• Fifty-seven women have set a new world record for a synchronized skydive in Ukraine. Three planes brought the divers to the point where, during 90 seconds of free fall, the skydivers changed formations three times. The previous record was set in the Netherlands and included 56 women.
