Andrij Makuch

OTTAWA – Andrij Makuch, a talented Ukrainian Canadian scholar and intellectual, passed away on January 18. He was 62.

Mr. Makuch made a significant contribution to Canadian scholarship through his many years of work at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS), as an editor at the Encyclopedia of Ukraine and an author of many articles and reviews in scholarly periodicals. 

He was also a research coordinator of the Ukrainian-Canadian Program at CIUS and most recently held the position of senior manuscript editor of the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine in the Toronto office of the CIUS. 

As associate director at the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium, Mr. Makuch fostered increasing knowledge about the Holodomor in Canada and around the world. 

A former executive director of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Mr. Makuch combined his love of education and scholarship with a deep dedication to the Ukrainian Canadian community. 

“Mr. Makuch’s passing is a profound loss for our community,” stated Alexandra Chyczij, national president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress. “I had the honor to know Andrij personally, and he will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and humor. On behalf of the Ukrainian Canadian community, I express my deepest sympathies to Mr. Makuch’s family and friends during this difficult time.” 

Mr. Makuch was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, and grew up in Victoria, British Columbia. He completed his master’s degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

The funeral liturgy was on January 24 at St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in Edmonton, Alberta. Interment followed at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
