Soccer
• Ukraine leads Group 5 of the Under-19 UEFA Championships with seven points after three matches, with two wins, one draw and no losses, with seven goals for and three against. Ukraine won 2-0 against Montenegro on May 19, won 4-2 against Poland on May 16, and tied 1-1 on May 14 with group hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ukraine advances to the final tournament round, where eight teams are split into two groups, with the top two teams headed to the semifinal round. Germany leads Group 2, Russia leads Group 3, the Netherlands leads Group 4, Austria leads Group 6 and France leads Group 7. Group 1 matches are ongoing May 29-June 3.
• Ukraine’s U-19 women’s team was eliminated from the final tournament after finishing in fourth place in the Elite Round of Group 5. Ukraine lost 0-1 against Belgium on April 4; lost 0-9 against Germany (group host and group winners) on April 6 and lost 0-3 against Scotland on April 9.
• Andriy Pavelko, 39, was selected as the new president of the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) on March 6 after receiving 122 out of 137 votes by delegates during the XVII Extraordinary Congress of the FFU in Kyiv. Pavelko, who will serve a four-year term as president of the FFU, brings experience as a well-known Ukrainian politician and lawmaker, having served as the chairman of the Football Federation of Dnipropetrovsk since 2001. Other candidates for the post of president of the FFU included Ihor Kolomoisky (eight votes) and Yaroslav Hryso (seven votes).
• In the UEFA Youth League, Shakhtar Donetsk won first place in Group H with 14 points, ahead of Portuguese club Porto (nine points), Spain’s Athletic Club (nine points) and Belarus’ FC BATE Borisov (one point). After a 1-1 draw with Greek club Olympiacos (Group A runner-up) on February 23 in Kyiv, Shakhtar won the match 5-4 in penalty kicks to advance to the quarterfinals. Shakhtar plays against Portuguese club Benefica in the quarterfinal on March 17 at Caixia Futebol Campus in Seixal, Portugal. Other teams in the quarterfinals include Italy’s Roma, England’s Manchester City, Belgian club Anderlecht and Porto. England’s Chelsea defeated Atletico Madrid 2-0 on March 10 to secure its spot in the semifinal.
• Referee Kateryna Monzul, who is from Ukraine, was ranked in second place of the annual ratings by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics. With experience from more than 60 matches, Monzul, 33, refereed at the 2014 Women World Cup in Canada and in the final match of the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
Futsal
• Ukraine leads Group 4 of the main round of the UEFA Futsal Euro tournament. The group is hosted by Azerbaijan, in second place in the group, and includes Belgium and Denmark. Ukraine won 3-2 against Azerbaijan on March 21, lost 2-9 against Belgium on March 19 and won 5-2 against Denmark on March 18. With Ukraine in first place in its group, it advances to the final tournament that will be played on February 2-13, 2016, in Serbia. The seven runners-up and the best third-placed team enter the playoffs on September 15-22, with the four winners from the playoffs advancing to the 12-team final tournament. The tournament had 24 other teams that competed in the preliminary round, in addition to the 21 in the main round, with a record-setting 45 countries competing.
Boxing
• Super lightweight Sergey Fedchenko (34-3-0, 14 KO) won by majority decision against Renald Garrido (14-10-1, 2 KO) of France on May 8 at the Hilton Westchester in Rye Brook, N.Y. Referees scored 77-75, 77-75, 76-76 after eight scheduled rounds.
Cruiserweight Iago Kiladze (23-1-0, 16 KO) of Ukraine won by fourth-round TKO (out of eight rounds scheduled) against Rayford Johnson (11-18-0, 6 KO) of the U.S.A. on April 25 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight was an undercard bout during the Klitschko-Jennings fight.
• Ukraine’s Otamans lost 0-5 against the Cuba Domadores on April 24 at the Ciudad Deportiva in Havana, Cuba, as part of the World Series of Boxing. Ukraine is in fourth place in Group A, with 27 points, after 14 matches, with eight wins and six losses, during 70 total fights, with a 35-35 win-loss record. Top-ranked fighters include Denys Pyatsyka (91 kg) in sixth place (4-0); Oleksandr Khyzhniak (81 kg) in fifth place (4-2); Hurshidbek Normatov (75 kg) of Uzbekistan in fourth place (5-1); Oleg Zubenko (69 kg) in 10th place (2-3); Mykola Butsenko (56 kg) in eighth place (3-2); Azat Usenaliev (52 kg) of Kyrgyzstan in seventh place (3-3); and Hasanboy Dusmatov (46-49 kg) of Uzbekistan in third place (7-0). On May 23-24, the Astana Arlans Kazakhstan fights against the Russian Boxing Team in the semifinal for Group B in Astana. In the Group A semifinal, Cuba fights against the Mexico Guerreros on May 21-22 in Havana.
• Super welterweight Artem Karpets (20-0-0, 6 KO) won against Mariusz Biskupski (21-37-2, 8 KO) of Poland by unanimous decision after six rounds (out of six) on April 18 in Legionowo, Poland. Judges scored the fight, 56-58, 58-56, 89-55.
• Middleweight Vitaliy Kopylenko (25-1-0, 14 KO) won by unanimous decision against American Lekan Byfield (6-8-2, 1 KO) after eight scheduled rounds on April 18 at Turning Stone Casino in Verona, Calif. Judges scored the fight 79-70, 79-70, 79-70.
• Super lightweight Viktor Postol (27-0-0, 11 KO) won by unanimous decision after eight rounds against American Jake Giurceo (17-3-1, 4 KO) on April 11 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The judges scored 80-72, 80-72, 79-73.
• On April 10 middleweight Sergiy Dervyanchenko (5-0-0, 4 KO) won by fourth-round TKO out of eight rounds against Alan Campa (13-2-0, 9 KO) of Mexico at the Aviator Sports Complex in New York. Also on the fight card that night, middleweight Evhen Khytrov (10-0-0, 10 KO) won against American Aaron Coley (9-1-1, 6 KO), with judges scoring 78-74, 79-73, 79-73.
• Super welterweight Stanislav Skorohod (9-1-0, 7 KO) lost against American John Thompson (16-1-0, 5 KO) by split decision after eight rounds at Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pa. The judges scored 74-78, 75-77, 78-74.
• Super middleweight Stas Kashtanov (31-1-0, 17 KO) won by third-round knockout against Mada Maugo of Tanzania at the Sports Palace in Noginsk, Russia, on April 5. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds.
• Welterweight Taras Shelestyuk (12-0-0, 8 KO) won by unanimous decision after eight rounds (out of eight) against American Juan Rodriguez Jr. (12-2-0, 5 KO) at Omega Products International in Corona, Calif., on April 3. Judges scored 78-74, 79-73, 79-73.
• Super bantamweight Oleksandr Yehorov (13-0-1, 6 KO) lost by unanimous decision after 12 rounds by Briton Gavin McDonnell (12-0-02, 4 KO) for the European Boxing Union title at Motorpoint Arena in Sheffield, England, on March 28. Judges scored 118-110, 118-109, 117-111 in favor of the Briton.
• Heavyweight Vyacheslav Glazkov (19-0-1, 12 KO) won by unanimous decision after 12 rounds against American Steve Cunningham (28-6-0, 13 KO) at the Bell Center in Montreal on March 14. On the same fightcard, light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KO) won by eighth-round TKO (out of 12 rounds) against Canadian Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KO) to retain the WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles.
• Anastasiia Chernokolenko is ranked third among amateur women boxers in the 81-kg division by the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA).
Athletics
• High jumper Bohdan Bondarenko won gold (2.24 meters) on May 26 at the 54th Ostrava Golden Spike event in Ostrava, the Czech Republic, as part of the IAAF World Challenge Meetings. Andriy Protsenko won third place (2.24 meters) in the same discipline. Anna Mischenko won gold in the women’s 1,500-meter race, with a time of 4:07.09 seconds.
• Olha Zemlyak won gold in the women’s 400-meter race (52.13 seconds) at the AA Drink FBK-Games as part of the IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Hengelo, the Netherlands, on May 24. Natalia Semenova won third place in the women’s discus throw (61.09 meters), and Yuri Krimarenko won third place in the men’s high jump (2.22 meters)
• Iryna Novozhylova won silver in the women’s hammer throw (67.50 meters) at the IAAF World Challenge Meeting in Dakar, Senegal, on May 23. Stanislav Melnykov won silver in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (50.66 seconds). Ksenya Savina won third place in the women’s 800-meter race (2:02.23 seconds), Vita Palamar won third place in the women’s high jump (1.86 meters) and Iryna Nikolayeva finished in fourth place in the women’s triple jump (13.24 meters).
• Anna Mishchenko won gold in the women’s 1,500-meter race at the 2015 IAAF World Challenge in Beijing on May 20.
