A proposal: let’s organize how-to-write seminars

More

Dear Editor:

I agree fully with Alexander J. Motyl’s commentary “Why don’t Ukrainian Americans write?” (December 28, 2014). His comments apply to our community in Canada and, indeed, around the world.

To fill the void, I proposed to our organized groups – women, youth – how-to-write seminars. Trust me: a half-day would instill considerable know-how and self-confidence on how to prepare op-eds, letters to the editor or commentary. And, the all-important step: how to get them published. I received some initial enthusiasm, then nada.

With youth summer camps approaching, Ukrainian schools starting new semesters and a new year of programming in our organizations, this neglected area could bring great results with a little nurturing. We reap what we sow. Vladimir Putin appears to believe that the pen is mightier than the sword. Okay, equally mighty. Don’t we?
