SOCCERMoraes cleared to play for national teamThe UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body reached a verdict on May 3, rejecting the protests of Portugal and Luxembourg soccer federations, and dismissed the case against Junior Moraes. The 32-year-old Shakhtar Donetsk player from Brazil was granted Ukrainian citizenship by President Petro Poroshenko and the CEDB determined that Moraes had legally obtained Ukrainian citizenship and was eligible to compete for the Ukrainian national team in its UEFA Group B European qualifiers. The matches will determine who from Group B will advance to the final stage of the Euro 2020 championship. 

Ambassador Yovanovitch’s early replacement sparks outcry

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch is set to depart in May, in accordance with a “three-year diplomatic assignment in Kyiv in 2019 as planned,” a U.S. State Department spokesperson stated to RFE/RL on May 6. Ambassador Yovanovitch was scheduled to vacate the post in July.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTSWelterweight Amosov wins by decisionWelterweight Yaroslav Amosov (21-0, 8 KO) won by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-28) after three rounds against Erick Silva (20-10, 4 KO) of Brazil on February 16 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Unvasville, Conn. Amosov’s wrestling skills were the deciding factor in the win, as Silva attempted to keep the Ukrainian at a distance with punches and kicks.

Ukraine’s autocephaly process discussed via virtual town hall

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – A virtual Town Hall meeting, “Ukraine Autocephaly: An Issue So Critical,” was hosted on January 26 by the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The meeting was held via conference call, with listeners able to ask questions (written in advance and posed during the call as it happened), and attracted an audience from across North America and likely beyond.

Ukraine’s women debut and qualify

Ukraine’s women’s ice hockey team qualified for the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship after finishing in first place in Division II Group B in its first appearance at the tournament during the qualifying round on January 13-18 in Cape Town, South Africa.

• Shakhtar Donetsk has drawn Eintracht Frankfurt and Dynamo Kyiv is set to play against Olympiacos (Greece) with the first-leg match on February 14 and the second-leg match on February 21, 2019. The draw was held on December 17 in Lyon, France. Both teams had been using Olympiyskiy Stadium in Kyiv for UEFA matches because Shakhtar was previously playing matches in Kharkiv. Because of martial law being declared in Kharkiv, Shakhtar’s matches were moved to Kyiv. The Europa League final is set for May 29, 2019, in Baku.

• Ukraine has drawn Group B, with Lithuania, Luxembourg, Portugal and Serbia, as part of the 2020 European Soccer Championships. The draw was made in Dublin, Ireland, on December 2. The qualifying rounds begin on March 21 and end in November. The 10 group winners and runners-up automatically qualify for the final stage of the tournament. The final four spots will be won by a play-off round among the 16 UEFA Nations League group winners.

• Sofiia Lyskun and Oleg Kolodiy won silver in the mixed 3-meter and 10-meter team dive at the FINA Diving World Cup on June 5-10 in Wuhan, China. • Stanislav Oliferchyk and Diana Shelestyuk won silver in the mixed 3-meter synchronized springboard dive at the FINA Diving Grand Prix on May 10-13 in Calgary, Alberta. Sofia Lyskun and Valeriia Liulko finished in fourth place in the women’s 10-meter platform synchronized dive. • Oleksandr Horshkovozov and Maksym Dolhov won silver in the men’s 10-meter platform synchronized dive, and Oleksandr Gorshkov and Oleg Kolodiy won bronze in the men’s 3-meter springboard synchronized dive at the FINA Diving World Series in Kazan, Russia, on May 4-6. 

Judo

• Dilshot Khalmatov (55 kg) and Kateryna Sablieva (44 kg) won gold at the Junior Judo European Cup in Cluj Napoca, Hungary, on August 11-12. Yevhen Vehera (100 kg) and Anastasiya Antipina (63 kg) won silver medals, and bronze medalists included Oleksii Babenko (90 kg), Stanislav Gunchenko (81 kg), Aslan Kurazov (100 kg), Giorgi Tchokhonelidze (66 kg), Dmytro Tsiukh (81 kg), Vadim Velkov (90 kg), Hanna Antylykalo (70 kg), Khrystyna Ianchuk (52 kg), Daryna Liashuk (48 kg), Vladyslava Netsvit (57 kg) and Anastasiia Vrublevksa (52 kg).
