Cindy McCain, who served as an election observer with the International Republican Institute, meets with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

“It’s Election Day in Ukraine. It is a great honor to have the chance to observe the Ukraine election with IRI Global at such a critical time in the history of Ukrainian democracy,” she tweeted on March 31.

On March 29 she said on Twitter: “John was a[n] ardent supporter of the Ukrainian people & their stand for freedom. He called his ’13 visit during the Euromaidan ‘one of the most moving experiences I have ever had… I have never seen anything like what we witnessed.’ I now understand why he loved Ukraine.”

On April 1, Ms. McCain tweeted that the IRI election observation mission “released our preliminary statement on the election. Proud to be part of this important mission and support Ukraine’s young #democracy.” During her stay in Ukraine Ms. McCain met with Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko – whom she called “an old friend” and with whom she said she reminisced about Sen. McCain – and President Petro Poroshenko. President Poroshenko spoke of Sen. McCain as “a great friend and advocate of Ukraine” and said a street in Kyiv would soon be named after him.
