TORONTO – The Taras Shevchenko Museum in Toronto has acquired a valuable collection of art from Ukraine: a total of 49 works created and donated by contemporary Ukrainian artists. They will be exhibited in a collection called “Picturesque Ukraine.”

These art works are part of an exhibition to be held at the museum from October 14 to December 20. All art pieces to be displayed were originally created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth on March 9, 1814.

The name of the exhibition, “Picturesque Ukraine,” was used by the great Ukrainian poet and artist himself. In 1844, Shevchenko created a series of engravings that he intended to publish as a periodical under the name “Picturesque Ukraine.”

The exhibit will open on Sunday, October 14, at 2:30 p.m. A wine and cheese reception will be held.

The Taras Shevchenko Museum is located at 1614 Bloor St. W., Toronto ON, M6P 1A7; telephone, 416-534-8662; website, www.infoukes.com/shevchenkomuseum.

Andrew Gregorovich is vice-president of the Taras Shevchenko Museum in Toronto.
