HARTFORD, Conn. – In response to the unrest in Eastern Europe, the young members of Maidan United joined together in their single mission of providing medical aid for Ukrainians injured in the conflict between Russian military and Ukrainian civilians. Based in Hartford, Conn., Maidan United raises funds through community events and donations, all of which go directly towards the treatment of people wounded in Ukraine’s struggle for democracy.

In the past, Maidan United has coordinated with U.S.-based organizations to have heavily wounded individuals transported to the United States for treatment. But this organization is not alone in this enormous undertaking – Maidan United has established a secure network with trusted groups in Ukraine to verify that medical assistance is distributed appropriately. Even with the holiday and family season in full swing, this small organization with a large heart has not reduced its efforts in helping its brothers and sisters in Ukraine.

On December 6, 2014, Maidan United invited the community to an open-house tour of one of Hartford’s historical homes for a holiday soiree. The residence of Lithuanian-descended Tomas Nenortas, author of “Victorian Hartford,” this 1898 Victorian treasure was decorated in full holiday splendor complete with lights galore and a partridge in a pear tree. Early in the day, Mr. Nenortas gave guests a historical tour of the building, a peek into a world long passed.

Evening marked the time for the true soirée with music, traditional Ukrainian food, signature drinks, and a celebration of brilliant people uniting in spirit with those in Ukraine who sorely need assistance during this time of giving. Guest speakers included Alex Kuzma, chief development officer at the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, and Mayor Pedro Segarra of Hartford. The night concluded with a raffle and silent auction.

Support for Ukraine totaled at $4,747, all of which will help Maidan United continue its mission to help those most in need of medical attention. The night of the holiday soirée could not have been as successful as it was without the help of all of Maidan United’s supporters and contributors.
