More information about Eleonora Karpinich Adams

Dear Editor:

As a former student of Prof. Eleonora Karpinich Adams, I was saddened to learn that she had passed away. Her obituary (May 31) mentioned that she taught German and Slavic languages and literatures at Temple University in the 1970s and 1980s.

It should be added that Prof. Adams taught two courses in Ukrainian studies at Temple: “Ukrainian Literature in Translation” and “Ukrainian Culture and Civilization.” Getting the university’s Slavic Department, dominated by Russophiles, to allow their introduction was a major accomplishment of Ukrainian students and faculty.

Prof. Adams was instrumental in establishing and developing these courses for the benefit of Ukrainian and other students. She organized guest lectures by faculty from other universities, visits to Ukrainian artists’ studios, and a tour of Philadelphia’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral and crypt.

Always gracious and supportive, Prof. Adams was a dedicated teacher and a pillar of the Ukrainian community at Temple University. May her memory be eternal!
