Zelenskyy sanctions pro-Kremlin lawmaker, cancels three TV channels, citing Russian propaganda

KYIV – As the clock struck midnight on February 3, three television channels known for their pro-Russian bias and spreading disinformation, ceased broadcasting. What appeared on TV screens were the rainbow-colored stripes of the tuning signal.

It was the outcome of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s presidential order from the previous day that approved a National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) decision to close the TV stations as part of a larger package of sanctions.

Ukraine’s SBU suspects former agency colonel of plotting to murder one of its generals

KYIV – On January 27, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said it had secured an arrest warrant for Dmytro Neskoromnyi, a former first deputy head of the agency, on suspicion of conspiring to murder a serving SBU general.

Mr. Neskoromnyi, a former SBU colonel, allegedly plotted the assassination with currently serving Col. Yuriy Rasiuk of the SBU’s Alpha anti-terrorist unit.

Ukrainians now legally entitled to service in Ukrainian

KYIV – Starting on January 16, a provision in Ukraine’s language law went into force that stipulates all public service providers must first address their customers in Ukrainian and they must provide information for customers while browsing or shopping in the state language.

Aside from commercial transactions, the provision also applies to educational, medical and social services, the office of the language ombudsman’s website says. At the customer’s request, service may be provided in another language, such as Russian or English, if it is mutually acceptable to both parties.

U.S. sanctions more Ukrainians suspected of interfering in 2020 presidential election

KYIV – The U.S. Treasury Department on January 11 sanctioned several Ukrainian individuals and entities linked to a Verkhovna Rada lawmaker that a Washington intelligence agency says is a Russian agent who allegedly attempted to influence the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

Joining lawmaker and suspected Russian agent Andriy Derkach, who does not belong to a political party, on the department’s “Specially Designated Nationals List” is Oleksandr Dubinsky, who leads the party Servant of the People.

Constitutional crisis looms after Zelenskyy suspends Constitutional Court chief justice

KYIV – Ukraine entered the new year with a mounting constitutional crisis that will further test President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s resolve to reform a system he promised “to break” during his election campaign.

Five days into 2021, the Constitutional Court issued a statement that said a presidential decree to suspend the court’s chief, Oleksandr Tupytskyi, “may lead to blocking the work” of the court and make it “impossible” to exercise “constitutional control in order to ensure the supremacy of the Constitution of Ukraine, assertion of human rights and freedom.”

Zelenskyy ‘biggest disappointment’ of 2020 as more controversial Cabinet appointments made

KYIV – As the year ends, a moderate reshuffle in the Cabinet of Ministers and at the executive branch took place over the past 10 days in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s administration amid the political newcomer’s dwindling popularity 19 months into his term.

Oleh Tatarov, the president’s deputy chief of staff responsible for law enforcement, said on December 21 that he would recuse himself of certain duties in order to cooperate with investigators and avoid a conflict of interest in a large-scale corruption case in which he is a suspect.
