NEW YORK – Self Reliance New York Federal Credit Union held its 68th annual meeting on Sunday, March 17, at the St. George Academy auditorium. Attending were 263 registered members, along with representatives of many youth, religious, cultural and educational organizations. 

The report of the Board of Directors was presented by Bohdan Kurczak, president and chief executive officer, who said the credit union experienced “another year of excellent financial performance.”

Mr. Kurczak noted that Self Reliance New York’s assets as of the end of 2018 were $1,329,977,486 (an increase of $2,119,317 since year-end 2017) and that net income for 2018 was $10,637,896 (compared with $10,147,494 in 2017). Dividends paid to members grew by 5 percent from last year, totaling $23,348,639. As of December 31, 2018, the credit union had 15,272 members.

During 2018 Self Reliance New York – which is headquartered in Manhattan and has branches in Astoria, Uniondale, Lindenhurst and Kerhonkson, N.Y. – supported youth, cultural, religious, educational and humanitarian organizations to the tune of $1.1 million in donations.

Reports by the Credit Committee and the Supervisory Committee were delivered by their chairmen, respectively, Orest Kebalo, and Bohdan Chaban. 

Honored guests attending the meeting included: Volodymyr Yelchenko, Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations; Oleksii Holubov, consul general of Ukraine in New York; Consul Denis Semenovych; Bishop Paul Chomnycky of the Stamford Eparchy; Bishop emeritus Basil Losten of the Stamford Eparchy; the Rev. Emilian Dorosh, OSBM, pastor of St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church. They all extended greetings to the credit union and its members.

Greetings were also given by representatives of the Ukrainian American credit union movement, including Andrew Horbachevsky, chairman of the Ukrainian National Credit Union Association; Andrij Burchak, board member of SUMA (Yonkers) Federal Credit Union; and Nataliya Kostyniuk, treasurer of the Ukrainian National Federal Credit Union.

Over 20 representatives of community organizations expressed their appreciation to the credit union and its Board of Directors for their continued support.

Orest Fedash, chairman of the nominating committee, nominated Stefan Kaczaraj and Adam Hapij, who were unanimously re-elected to three-year terms on the Board of Directors. 

At the board’s annual organizational meeting, Catherine Popovech was elected to the position of board chairperson, the post previously held by Mr. Kaczaraj.

Ms. Popovech has been a member of the Board of Directors since 1996, most recently serving as vice-chairperson. Prior to joining the board, Ms. Popovech served on the credit union’s Supervisory Committee in 1995-1996. Mr. Kaczaraj served as chairman of the board since 2011 and will now assume the position of vice-chairman.

All other board positions remain unchanged: Mr. Kurczak, president and CEO; Andrij Juzeniw, board secretary; Mark Bach, treasurer; Mr. Hapij, membership officer; and Yuriy Jarymowycz, member.
