Dear Editor:
For more than four decades Roma Hadzewycz worked conscientiously and tirelessly, exhibiting great professionalism and a deep devotion to her work. As editor of The Ukrainian Weekly for nearly half of its existence, she has been a pivotal figure in the Ukrainian-American community. Her contributions cannot be overstated.
Throughout her distinguished career, Roma recognized the importance of chronicling the story of America’s involvement with Ukraine, both before and after independence – and not only by the executive branch, but also the vital role played by Congress. I saw this throughout my 35 years at the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission), including with The Weekly’s consistently excellent coverage of our Ukraine-related work.
Under Roma’s leadership, The Ukrainian Weekly has become an indispensable publication for anyone wanting to learn about the work of the Ukrainian American community and other Ukraine-related developments. Of utmost significance is that The Weekly also offers a collection of materials that is second to none for anyone studying the evolution of U.S.-Ukraine relations during the last 40 years – arguably the most consequential time in Ukraine’s history. We all owe her a debt of gratitude.
