TORONTO – Ukrainian community leaders met with Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Toronto on April 22. Paul Grod, national president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, led the community delegation.

Canada’s Ambassador to Ukraine Roman Waschuk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada Andriy Shevchenko and Member of Parliament Borys Wrzesnewskyj (Etobicoke-Center) attended the meeting.

Minister Klimkin was in Toronto to participate in meetings with Group of Seven (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, United States) Foreign Ministers. Canada holds the presidency of the G-7 for 2018.

Community leaders and Minister Klimkin discussed the next steps in Canada’s continuing support for Ukraine as Ukraine defends itself against Russian aggression. They also discussed plans to open a Ukrainian Consulate in Edmonton, Alberta. According to Minister Klimkin, the Consulate will officially open in September of this year.

“We are glad that Canada invited Minister Klimkin to the meeting of G-7 Foreign Ministers, which underlines the importance placed by the G-7 on ending Russia’s war against Ukraine and reversing Russia’s occupation of sovereign Ukrainian territory,” stated Mr. Grod. “We were able to have a frank exchange and dialogue with Minister Klimkin, including recommendations from our community on next steps the Ukrainian authorities should take.”
