KYIV – The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a decision introducing an adaptive coronavirus lockdown until June 22, while the second stage of the easing of lockdown restrictions will begin on May 22, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said at a government meeting on May 20.
As part of the second phase of eased restrictions, it is planned that public transport, and urban and suburban land transport will be resumed. Authorities will permit sports competitions (limited to 100 people and without spectators) and the operation of hotels (though not hostels). At the same time, the operation of restaurants and swimming pools in hotels will continue to be banned.
It will also be possible to hold services in houses of worship, with a maximum of one person per 10 square meters of floor space.
Beginning on May 25, the government plans to allow the operation of kindergartens, as well as the operation of subways in cities where the epidemiological situation is favorable.
Mr. Shmyhal said that the third phase of eased lockdown restrictions would include the start of training activities, the opening of gyms and fitness centers (without swimming pools) and the resumption of interregional traffic. Air travel can also be resumed in June, however, this is dependent also on how other countries resume flights.
The number of Ukraine’s COVID-19 cases grew to 19,230 as of May 20, according to Health Minister Maksym Stepanov.
“Some 354 persons have fallen ill over the past day. During the entire period of the pandemic, 19,230 people have fallen ill, including 1,376 children and 3,757 health-care workers,” Mr. Stepanov reported at a briefing on May 20.
According to the health minister, 28 children and 61 health workers contracted COVID-19 over the past day. Ukraine recorded 323 recovered cases and 16 deaths related to the coronavirus during that same period. The largest number of coronavirus cases over the past day were reported in the Chernivtsi region (54), Kyiv city (51) and Volyn region (41).
In total, 5,955 people in Ukraine have recovered and 564 people have died since the start of the pandemic.
