A Ukrainian Summer: where to go, what to do...

What the students say

Following is a sample of testimonials written by students of the Mohyla Summer Immersion program.

My three summers at Mohyla have instilled in me a sense of myself and my immense pride in being Ukrainian. It has enriched my life. I have benefited from this experience, and I will continue to benefit well into the future.

Mohyla is not simply mortar and brick, it is an icon of learning for the young, built by the efforts of our ancestors. May we, the youth of Mohyla not forget that ... we can and must pass this Ukrainian institution of learning and friendship to the future generations of Ukrainian Canadians.

I know that it has changed my life and my attitudes. I will remember these summers forever.

Our ancestors have established a proud heritage here in Canada, and it is up to us to continue this legacy and make our mark on the Canadian mosaic.

- Adam Shipowick, Milton, Ontario, Students' Council President, class of 1999.

Even though my mom bribed me to come here, I had a great time anyway. I've soaked in so much Ukrainian stuff, my mom will faint.

- Nathan Martindale, Winnipeg, class of 1993.

Back home our friends don't understand why we keep coming back for more every year and what we have here, together. The Ukrainian culture and language is a part of us, and it is the special thing that brings us close. We can never have friends like this back home who are so close and who know us and feel the same way we do.

- Maria Feloniuk, Windsor, Ontario, class of 1993.

We learned a lot not just about the Ukrainian language, but also about each other, ourselves, our culture, history and Ukrainian music.

- Leanna Wachniak, Saskatoon, class of 2004.

Mohyla was definitely the source of most of my character building as a teenager. It sparked an instant pride in my culture which inspired creativity and music. The memories I have from time spent at Mohyla are irreplaceable.

- Theresa Sokyrka, Saskatoon, class of 1996.

We were all so proud of what we accomplished together at the end we were like a family. We all left the building as strong, proud Ukrainian Canadians. Memories and friends last a lifetime.

- Stephania Makarenko, Toronto, class of 2004.

It is impossible to put into words the impact Mohyla has had on my life. Because of my two summers there, I know that I have learned what it means to be Ukrainian. Mohyla has given me a true understanding of my heritage and has deepened my pride of my culture into a great and undying love.

- Natalia Kushnir, Minneapolis, class of 2002.

The quality and amount of information that I gained about the language and the culture was amazing, I feel like a better person having gone through it all ... I didn't want to go home, everything about the Mohyla program was so wonderful to me.

- Mark Trischuk, Saskatoon, class of 2004.

Most of us came here as young Canadians, but we are leaving as young Ukrainian Canadians ...

- Juliann Rosizky, Burlington, Ontario, Students' Council President, class of 2003.
