by Paula Holoviak

LEHIGHTON, Pa. - The Ukrainian American Heritage Foundation (UAHF) will sponsor the 17th annual folk dance workshop and camp for children and young adults from June 26 to July 1, at the Ukrainian Homestead in Lehighton, Pa.

The camp runs daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes dance instruction, singing, traditional crafts, sports, lunch and a snack. Instruction is offered to children age 5 and up, with advanced workshop instruction for experienced dancers as well.

As in previous years, the workshop will include instruction with Andrij Dobriansky of the Syzokryli Ensemble of New York City for the younger participants, and classical and folk training with David Woznak of the Kashtan School of Ukrainian Dance in Parma, Ohio, for the advanced dancers.

In addition to classical and folk dance instruction, the 2006 camp will feature a special mini-workshop with guest artist Mr. Woznak. Mr. Woznak will conduct a lecture/workshop on traditional Ukrainian ceramics. This workshop will be open to all campers who will create their own ceramic pieces. In addition, Mr. Woznak will offer one evening lecture/workshop for interested adults at the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts in Pottsville, Pa.

The camp will conclude with a performance on Saturday, July 1, at 7 p.m. This performance is open to the public, free of charge, and will be followed by a "zabava" (dance) in the Ukrainian Homestead ballroom.

For more information on the camp or the lecture, contact Dr. Paula Holoviak at 570-708-1992 or by e-mail at [email protected].

The camp is supported by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by the Pennsylvania General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by Berks Arts Council. Additional funding comes from the Schuylkill County Commissioners through the Schuylkill County Council for the Arts.
