NEW YORK - Summer is perhaps the most exciting time of a Plast scout's year, and this summer, the Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization has a full roster of opportunities for its young members.

"Vyshkoly," or counselor training camps, will kick off the summer season at the Vovcha Tropa, Novyi Sokil and Zelenyi Yar campgrounds. Yunatskyi Vyshkil on August 12-18 at Zelenyi Yar in Michigan is open to Plast youths and young adults. Its program centers on providing aspiring counselors of yunatstvo (youths age 12-18) with challenging activities and programs and plans to implement these tasks at summer camps and throughout the year.

"Vyshkil Novatskykh Vporiadnykiv" at Vovcha Tropa on June 24-July 5 is a wonderful way for youths to learn how to be exemplary counselors for the youngest members of the Plast organization. "Lisova Shkola," an intense camp for developing counselor training skills and wilderness adeptness and survival will take place in Hunter, N.Y., on June 24-July 7.

"Krayovyi Vyshkilnyi Tabir" for older yunatstvo preparing for Plast's eagle scout rank is scheduled for July 30 to August 12 at the Novyi Sokil campground in North Collins, N.Y. "KVT," as it's called, guides the participant through a series of projects associated with the main tenets and principles of the Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization.

Three-week camps for "novatstvo" (children age 6-11) and "yunatstvo" (age 12-18) will take place on July 8-29 at the Vovcha Tropa campground in East Chatham, N.Y., Novyi Sokil in North Collins, N.Y., and Pysanyi Kamin in Middlefield, Ohio. In addition, a special two-week camp for older yunatstvo (age 16-18) will be held at the Vovcha Tropa campground on July 8-23.

Those who wish to extend their summer camp experiences can choose from an array of special focus camps including Golf Camp at Novyi Sokil on July 30-August 12, Mountain Biking Camp in Lehighton, Pa., on August 5-11, Sea Scouting Camp on August 5-12 (location not yet determined), and Sports Camp from July 30-August 5 at Novyi Sokil.

For teens seeking an international Plast experience, traveling to Ukraine from the end of June until the middle of July will offer many opportunities for summer camping in various parts of the country. A camp for novatstvo in July will be held in either the Chernihiv or Poltava oblasts, while yunatstvo camps are slated for Ivano-Frankivsk, Donetsk and areas on the shores of the Black Sea.

Plast summer camps are perhaps the most fun part of the Plast experience and are a culmination of all the knowledge and activities of the entire Plast year. It's imperative for a child to be familiarized with Plast activities, structure and regional happenings before attending summer camps. There is a requirement that a child be enrolled in the organization for at least three months before attending a Plast camp.
